Join Mike Loughman and Brodie Bennett-Aru on their inspiring journey, "Mike's March for Mental Health," as they set off from Government House in Edmonton at approx 9:00 am on August 13th, 2023, destined for Airdrie. This isn't just a walk; it's a symbol of the struggle with mental health. Both Mike and Brodie will be walking with a ball and chain, a representation of the weight of mental illness that many carry every day, often unseen by others. Years ago, Mike was deeply moved by a painting he saw at a fundraiser. It depicted a smiley face with a ball and chain, and the artist explained that it represented the struggle of living with mental illness, the constant effort to act as if the weight isn't there. This resonated with Mike, inspiring him to carry a chain in his walks to raise awareness and support for mental health. Now, Brodie joins him in this symbolic act. This march is about more than raising awareness; it's about making a tangible difference. The funds raised from this event will be split evenly between the Mood Disorders Society of Canada and Mike's own non-profit, the Sober Friends Society. Both organizations are dedicated to supporting those struggling with mental health concerns and substance abuse. Mike's previous march from High Level to Airdrie spanned 1,021 kilometers and raised over $10,000 for two charities. Despite the physical and mental challenges, Mike pushed through, carrying a five-pound metal ball and chain throughout the journey to symbolize his battle with depression. His determination and resilience were an inspiration to many, and he hopes to inspire even more with this upcoming march, especially with Brodie joining him this time. Join Mike and Brodie in their mission to unmask mental health, to show the world that it's okay not to be okay, and to remind everyone that even when we're carrying a heavy burden, we're never alone. Let's walk together, one step at a time, towards a future where mental health is understood, accepted, and supported.
